Avandia Lawsuit ReviewThe New England Journal of Medicine has released the results from 42 studies involving 15,560 diabetes patients who were prescribed Avandia. Patients getting Avandia were 43 percent more likely to have a heart attack. The study also suggested a trend toward higher death rates in the Avandia group.

Avandia / rosiglitazone is manufactured by drug maker GlaxoSmithKline, and is one of the most popular pharmaceuticals for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. Avandia was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 to help patients with diabetes keep blood sugar levels within safe limits. Since then, 60 million prescriptions have been written for the drug, the researchers said.

"Unless this can be refuted, which I rather doubt, then this is going to seriously damage one of the cornerstones of Glaxo going forward," said Paul Diggle, an industry analyst at Nomura Code Securities in London.

FDA Reported Possible Side Effects Include:

  • Avandia is in the same class of drugs as Rezulin, which has been associated with rare but serious liver injury, including liver failure leading to transplant or death.
  • When taking Avandia with other oral diabetes medicines, there is a risk of your blood sugar becoming dangerously low.
